Fussy-cut them to create a kaleidoscope of color.
Materials
If you are fussy-cutting, you may need more than the yardages specified depending on your fabrics’ repeats.
3 yards fuchsia print (blocks)
1 yard each of pink pony print and multicolor chevron (blocks)
2 yards multicolor floral (blocks)
2 3/4 yards ivory print (blocks)
1 3/4 yards pink-and-orange dot (sashing)
1/4 yard light turquoise print (sashing squares)
3/4 yard multicolor feather print (binding)
5 1/2 yards backing fabric
83x98 batting
Finished quilt: 74 3/4 x 89 1/2" (full-size with 10" drop)
Finished block: 9" square
Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width.
Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press toward darker fabric.
Cut fabrics
Cut pieces in the following order. Patterns are on Pattern Sheets 1 and 2. To make templates of patterns, see Make and Use Templates. Be sure to transfer dots and center marks to templates, then to fabric pieces.
Designer fussy-cut most of the fabrics: He centered the pink-andorange dot in the sashing strips, centered a pink star in each light turquoise print sashing square, and cut each set of four matching.
A wedges from identical positions in the large prints.
From fuchsia print, cut: 120 of Pattern B
From pink pony print, cut: 32 of Pattern A
From multicolor chevron, cut: 28 of Pattern A
From multicolor floral, cut: 60 of Pattern A

Tips for Fussy Cutting
To create the striking “circles” in his quilt, fussy-cut A wedges from three different types of prints. Start by tracing Pattern A onto template plastic; cut out. Then identify your print type.
Large-scale print with multiple motifs: Place template on right side of fabric. Move it until you’re happy with area isolated by template. Trace around template. Before moving template, use a pencil to trace some motifs onto the template (see photo, below). Reposition template in same place on another fabric section; trace. Repeat to create four matching wedges total. Erase pencil marks on template. Repeat to trace 15 sets of four matching wedges; cut out.
To ensure he had enough fabric, traced all wedges before cutting out any pieces.
Print with a repeating design, such as a chevron or stripe: Trace multiple wedges in a line across fabric, aligning template with the same portion of the design each time.
Assemble blocks
1. With right sides together, match center notches of a fuchsia print B arc and a pink pony print, multicolor chevron, or multicolor floral A piece (Diagram 1). Pin together at center, at seam ends, and liberally in between, gently easing edges as needed to align (Diagram 2).
2. Sew together curved edges to make a corner unit (Diagram 3). Clip into seam allowance of the edge that curves in (the concave edge) as needed to get it to lie flat, but do not cut into or beyond seam lines. Do not clip convex edge (the edge that curves out).
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make 120 corner units total (30 sets of four matching corner units).
4. Before assembling blocks, lay out all corner units in sets of four to create 30 circles (Quilt Assembly Diagram).
5. Referring to your layout and the Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew two adjacent corner units to an ivory print C piece to make a block (Diagram 4). The block should be 9 1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 49 blocks total.
6. Sew a remaining corner unit to an ivory print D piece to make a setting triangle (Diagram 5). Repeat to make 22 setting triangles total.
Assemble quilt
1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out blocks, setting triangles, pinkand-orange dot sashing strips, light turquoise print sashing squares, and setting triangles in 21 diagonal rows. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward sashing strips.
2. Join rows. Press seams toward sashing strips.
3. Referring to Diagram 6, trim sashing squares and ivory print D pieces 1/4" beyond points of sashing strips (see inset) to complete quilt top.
Finish quilt
1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste.
2. Quilt as desired. David Hurd machinequilted a curved grid in the ivory print, feathers in the fuchsia print pieces, and a feather-and-scroll motif where the matching corner units come together with the sashing (Quilting Diagram).
3. Bind with multicolor feather print binding strips.
